Abstract

Despite the importance of protected agriculture in general and its ability to shield crops from adverse weather conditions, increase agricultural production and meet local needs for most vegetable crops, in addition to its role in raising the productive efficiency of land and irrigation water units, and overcoming the seasonality of labor and production compared to agriculture in open fields, the spread of greenhouses in Egypt is still less than the desired level.

Growers can get a greenhouse design that’s tailored around their exact needs, no matter where they are located or what crops they produce. This will help them take full advantage of their structure and get the most out of the benefits of a greenhouse, greenhouses can help any grower sustain long-term success.

The main objective of this article is to present:

a) Requirements of sustainable greenhouse

b) A comparative study of the production of the most important vegetable crops in greenhouse and open field agriculture in Egypt.

c) The role of greenhouse technology in increasing crop production

This article shows that the greenhouses can contribute to sustainability by enabling year-round production, conserving water, reducing pesticide use, and potentially lowering transportation emissions. But their overall impact depends on how they're designed and managed
